Hi Philly!

Recently, I had the luck to work on a project in Philadelphia for two charter schools, Global West and Global Southwest, through my friends Loni and Desi’s new agency, “Sauce”. My role was set designer and prop stylist, which meant that I was tasked with helping bring the story of the schools and classrooms and library to life visually. It was work, yes, but it felt like so much more than that. Every day I spent there left me buzzing with energy, gratitude, and joy in a way I hadn’t quite expected.

The schools themselves were extraordinary. Led by Dr. Booker, the staff referred to the children with titles that lifted them higher—“Kings, Queens, Graduates, and Scholars.” The students, dressed in sharp fresh uniforms, carried themselves with confidence and pride. They stood tall, engaged, and ready to learn. None had any modeling experiance, and all exceeded the gig and expectations. I got to work with students across all the grades, kindergarten through eighth, and what struck me most was how bright, curious, and kind they all were. My cheeks hurt from smiling every single evening when I took the school bus back to the hotel. :D

As I styled the sets, I roamed the halls and peeked into teacher closets, each brimming with individuality and treasures, searching for objects that could add to the story—globes, maps, classroom art, and old posters. These objects, mixed with the many props I had brought with me, created spaces that reflected both the history and the vibrancy of the schools. It was a playful, intuitive process, and the joy of discovery only added to the satisfaction I felt in my work. I was paired with a brilliant young man named Ike, who knocked this job out of the park with me! A truly natural creative soul. Thank you Ike!

What moved me most, during the work was the spirit of the community. There was a sense of dignity and purpose in those halls that stayed with me long after we wrapped. The staff’s commitment, the students’ brilliance, and the daily rituals of respect and pride gave me a glimpse into why people devote their lives to education and children. I left feeling humbled. This wasn’t just about creating a set—it was about honoring a place where young lives are being shaped in the most meaningful way every day, every month and every year.

On my last day, a young and dedicated staff member I’d gotten to know throughout the job named “Stone”told me that if I ever wanted to come and work at the school, I’d be welcomed anytime. I can’t overstate how deeply that compliment touched me. It was more than an invitation—it felt like recognition of the connection I had made there. I left Philadelphia with a full heart, grateful beyond words, and forever changed by the experience. My friend Loni’s agency “SAUCE” I highly recommend for any job coast to coast that you need help bringing into fruition. A true collaborative visionary PRO!!! Forever grateful Loni!
