This year Sunset Magazine decided to tell a potted tree live Christmas Tree Story. I got brought in by Sr Home Editor Joanna Linberg. She is amazing! Paired with Maili Holiman Art Director whom I think the world of! Shot by Tom Story. Solid talented crew! We set about with tree selections, pot finding. Of course we hit up Flora Grubb, the usual suspect...because...well, FLORA GRUBB!!! I pitched about 15 ideas, Joanna who is beyond clever, narrowed it down to five themes, but only four made the cut!
I gathered branches from the Menlo Park Sunset Campus, cast offs only. To make the golden/glitter branches paired with vintage glass balls, and wee copper wire led lights. The second tree I bought terrariums from Paxton Gate, and we planted them with air-plants, and succulents, lava rocks, sand. Like little worlds in each terrarium. We picked a sturdy tree, and when I say sturdy I mean...that was the toughest tree I've ever handled!
The fourth picture I created handmade wool ornaments. I used wool roving from Imagineknits in San Francisco and more from A Childs Dream website in Sandpoint, Idaho.. I used Yak wool for the Navy and Ivory Balls...WOW YAK WOOL STINKS! I spent about two hours wet felting the yak wool at the kitchen sink and felt a little bit like I was scrubbing the underside of a yak. A smell that stays around the finger tips for about three days after!
The final fourth tree, was my favorite!!! My (then) Assistant Alex the Great, and I were brainstorming what could be the next candy cane...and we came up with rock candy! I LOVE the simplicity of this tree. So sweet, simple white lights and sweeties! What's not to love? Yum!
Here's some behind the scenes extra shots too for all you Sunset Lovers!
Thank you Sunset!!!!!
